Essential Tips About Residential Air Conditioning

Blog

Air conditioning is a luxury that many homeowners cherish during the hot summer months. Keeping your air conditioning running properly not only adds to your comfort but can also help keep your energy costs down.

Let's look at some essential tips that will help you keep your air conditioning running smoothly and efficiently.

Filters

One of the simplest things you can do to help keep your air conditioning working at its peak efficiency is having clean filters. Your filters should be replaced at least every 90 days. If you have pets or live where there is much dust, you may want to clean or replace your filters monthly.

Your air filter will be located in one of the following places:

  • Behind the air return grille on the wall or ceiling.
  • In a slot on the top, bottom, or side of your furnace.
  • Inside the blower compartment of your furnace or air handler.

When purchasing new filters, high-efficiency pleated filters are your best option. These newer filters have an electrostatic charge that grabs even the smallest of particles.

Refrigerant Lines

The refrigerant lines run from your outside unit to the house. Inspect these lines on a monthly basis looking for signs of damage. Should you discover a damaged line, it is best to replace it before it breaks.

Outside Unit

You should clear two feet of space around your outdoor unit. Keep that area and the unit itself free of leaves, grass, and other debris.

Check the condenser fan periodically. Be sure to turn the power to your air conditioner unit off before doing so. The fan is located on the top of your unit. Check its condition and replace it if you see any cracks or chips on the blades.

If you have an older unit, the fan motor bearings may need to be oiled periodically.

With the power to the unit off, take a look at the wiring and components by removing the access panel of the unit. Look at the wires checking for damage such as melting or dark spots. Check the electrical connections looking for anything that may be loose.

If you are uncomfortable doing any of these things, call a professional to take a look and make necessary repairs.

Routine Maintenance

You can save time, money and help ensure your comfort by having a professional come out and perform regular maintenance on your air conditioning system. This may include inspecting, cleaning, and adding Freon.

This maintenance will ensure that your unit runs as efficiently as possible.

Should you encounter a problem that is beyond what you can handle, don't hesitate to call a professional repair person (like those at Cape Fear Air Conditioning & Heating Co., Inc.).
